For many, enjoying a baseball game at the ballpark or on TV with family and friends is a favorite summer pastime. Even minor league games in far-flung locations with entertaining team names and mascots provide otherwise lukewarm baseball fans counting the days until college/pro football begins with a few hours (and for the kids, mini-helmets full of ice cream) entertainment.
As I recently shared with a class of 4th graders at a charter school client in the Bronx during their career day (7th graders were more interested in discussing legal issues they see online and on TV, of course), when I was in 4th grade back in 1987, we not only learned about the U.S. Constitution, but celebrated its bi-centennial anniversary, too. Prior to sharing this, I asked the eager room of students what happened in 1787 and much to the pleasure of their teachers, myself and social studies teachers everywhere, many students- and rather quickly- shouted out “The Constitution!”.
With the official first day of summer and end of the School year in the same week, many begin to turn their attention to summer travel, thoughts about planning summer travel or otherwise dreaming about being outside and away from their desks- perhaps near a lake, on the beach or in the mountains- enjoying sun, water and time with family and friends.
Not necessarily a post you would be expecting as part of the Firm’s “Summer of Law” series, but as we approach the end of high school prom season, we wanted to write about post-high school prom liability waivers that have received some attention (See New York Times Article titled Prom Accessories: Corsages, Limousines and Liability Waivers).
As we return from Memorial Day Weekend where spring comes to an end and summer takes hold- especially after a particularly long winter- many begin to focus on the warm weather and all that comes with it—lunches outside, happy hours, 4th of July, long weekends, vacations, trips to the beach, days in the many NYC parks, an (even more) relaxed dress code and for most- no school!
